How to get the PDF: markdown → Google Docs → PDF

Each example above is downloadable as a .md file via the 'Download .md' button on each example tab. Markdown is the source format because it's portable - it opens in any text editor, imports cleanly into Google Docs, Word, Notion, and Obsidian, and converts to PDF in one step from any of those.

To get PDF from markdown: open the .md file in Google Docs (paste contents in - Docs renders markdown headings as headings automatically), then File → Download → PDF Document (.pdf). In Word: open the .md, enable markdown rendering, then File → Save As → PDF. In Notion: paste contents into a new page, then ... → Export → PDF.

Why we don't ship PDF directly. PDF is a terminal format - you can read it, you can't easily edit it. Markdown is the working format - you edit it, then convert to PDF when you're ready to send. Shipping PDF as the primary asset would force every team to re-derive their brief by transcribing it back out. Markdown skips that round-trip.

Print-ready formatting. Each example above is designed to render as 1-2 pages in standard portrait PDF at 11pt body / 16pt headings. The DTC supplement and beauty examples are single-page; the B2B SaaS and outdoor apparel examples are 2-page (because they include reasons-to-believe and deliverables sections that take more room).

Why a PDF brief still matters in 2026

PDFs survive email forwarding. When you brief a creator, agency, or freelance editor, the brief usually gets forwarded once or twice before the actual maker reads it. PDFs preserve formatting through forwarding; markdown, Notion links, and Google Docs links don't always (broken permissions, paywalled docs, etc).

PDFs are signable. For agency or freelancer work, the brief often becomes part of the SOW. PDFs sign in DocuSign or Adobe Sign in one step. Markdown doesn't.

PDFs print. This sounds dated but isn't - production teams often print the brief and pin it to the studio wall during shoots. A clean printable PDF is meaningfully different from a 14-tab Notion workspace in that context.

PDFs version cleanly. Brief v1, brief v2, brief v3 as three PDF files is a clear version history. Same brief edited live in Google Docs without explicit versioning is a recipe for someone reading the wrong version.

What to look for when reading the PDF examples

Structural completeness. Each PDF example has all 7 required sections filled in - objective, audience, angle, hook archetype, do-nots, deliverables, and the format note. Don't ship a brief that skips any of the 7. The skipped sections become production-time arguments.

Section specificity. Each section should make a sharp choice. Vague briefs print just as fast as specific ones and produce worse work. The PDFs above are calibration references for how specific each section should be when you fill in your own.

Do-nots as the keystone. Notice that every PDF example has 5-7 do-nots, each targeting a specific failure mode. The absence of do-nots is the single biggest predictor of generic creative output. If your filled brief has fewer than 5 do-nots, add more before you export to PDF.
